Denis Plantagenet Tollemache was born on 12 January 1884. He was the son of Hon. Lyonel Plantagenet Tollemache and Lady Blanche Sybil King. He died on 1 May 1942 at age 58, unmarried. On 6 May 1905 granted rank of baron's younger son. He was Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1919. He was High Sheriff Rutland , Lieutenant-Colonel 7th Hus, WW I (despatches, brevet, POW 1917–18): GSO(3) 1914, Bde-Maj 1914–15, commander 1st Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment 1916–17 (and 7th Hussars 1923–27, ret 1928) in 1933.

In 1895 Violet Gwynne entered into a mariage blanc with Gordon Woodhouse. His reasons for entering into the marriage are unclear. In 1899, William Barrington (heir to a viscountcy) moved into the marital house, joined later by Max Labouchere and Denis Tollemache. This arrangement was referred to in society circles as the "Woodhouse circus".
