Margaret Mary "Peggy" James Porter (March 24, 1887 - October 20, 1950) deferred marriage until relatively late (her 30th year), and then chose as a husband a man 22 years older than herself: Bruce Porter of San Francisco, who, years before, had been one of her uncle, Henry James' beloved younger men and whose sexual preferences were decidedly ambivalent. It is known that during her years at Bryn Mawr (1908-1910), Peggy had formed an intensely homosocial attachment to the poet Marianne Moore.

Margaret Mary "Peggy" James Porter was born in Cambridge, Middlesex, Massachusetts, on 24 Mar 1887 to William James (1842-1910) and Alice Howe Gibbons (1849-1922). Margaret Mary James married Edmund Bruce Porter (1865-1953) and had 2 children, Robert Bruce Porter (1918-1961) and Catherine J Porter (1921-1990). She passed away on 20 OCT 1950 in San Francisco Co., California.
