Kate L. Walton (1917-1985) served as legal counsel for Zelma Cason, plaintiff in the Cason versus Baskin case, also known as The Cross Creek Trial. Walton with E.A. Clayton of Gainesville represented the plaintiff, and led off the arguments briefly saying there was no evidence to show Cason that she was being made a character in the book by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings and that the law is to "protect we little people, the common people."

Walton was the daughter of J.V. Walton and graduated from the University of Florida Law School and in 1936 was one of the first women admitted to the Florida Bar.

The J.V. Walton house still stands at 605 N. 3rd Street, Palatka. Kate Walton lived her final years at 193 Walton Ln, East Palatka.
