Herbert Morland Stern was born in 1882 in Rochester, New York. His parents were Morley A. Stern, a partner in the clothing firm of Michaels-Stern and Co., and Amelia Sarah "Amy" Michaels. Herbert Stern attended the University of Rochester from 1900 to 1902, and graduated from Harvard in 1905. He then studied architecture from 1905 to 1907. In 1915, he joined James Burns Arnold (1881-1957), formerly employed by Claude Bragdon, in the new architectural firm of Arnold and Stern. The partnership lasted until 1932. From 1932 until the mid-1950s, the partners practiced independently. Herbert Stern died March 22, 1977.
