He earned his B.A. in art history from Yale in 1960 and received his M.A., in 1965, and his Ph.D., in 1973, both from Columbia.

Santomasso as an instructor was known for opening office and New York City home to students to whom he taught undergraduate architecture. Santomasso's areas of interests included: German expressionist architectural theory design, French architecture, Austrian architecture of the 20th century and the architecture and planning of the 1939 New York World's Fair.

An article in a 1972 issue of "Columbia College Today" described Santomasso: "In every generation there are a very few teachers whose courses are not merely excellent, they are an absolute must; whose offices are always packed with students; whose phones never stop ringing. Santomasso is one of these."

In 1967 Santomasso joined Columbia as an instructor in art history. In 1973 he became assistant professor of art history and in 1982 adjunct assistant professor of architecture and planning. He was also an associate professor of art history at Brooklyn College and the C.U.N.Y. Graduate Center.

Santomasso, with his daughter Nicole and Bianca, is featured in the documentary We Are Family, produced by Aimee Sands, Narrated by Susan Stamberg, WGBH Boston (New York, NY: Filmakers Library, 1988). Prior to her work with InterExchange, Nicole lived, worked, and studied in India and Japan. She holds an M.B.A. in Management from the Zicklin School of Business at CUNY Baruch College and a B.A. in History from Oberlin College.
