Walter Dodgson (January 13, 1866 – August 25, 1925) was born on January 13, 1866, in Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, England, as the son of Aquila (or Aquilla) Dodgson of Limehurst, Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire, and Jane Oldroyd. He grew up alongside his siblings, including brothers Edwin Oldroyd Dodgson, George Stanley Dodgson, and sister Rachel Agnes Dodgson, appearing with his family in the 1871 census living in Oldham, Lancashire. For his education, he attended Manchester Grammar School under Mr. Dill before entering Trinity College, Cambridge, where he was admitted on October 6, 1887, matriculating in the Michaelmas term of 1887, joining his brother George who had entered the previous year. At Cambridge, he pursued the Mathematical Tripos and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in 1890, later qualifying and working as a solicitor.

Regarding his affiliations and personal life, records note his membership among the Cambridge Apostles, an elite intellectual secret society at the university. During his life, he married Mary Boyd Stockdale, with whom he had two children. Accounts of his later life and death vary across genealogical records, with suggestions pointing either to a death around 1925 in Leeds, Yorkshire, or alternatively on December 7, 1947, in Tunbridge Wells, Kent.
