Mary S. Malone (October 26, 1878 - March 30, 1968) was born on October 26, 1878, and grew to become a prominent social reformer, activist, and public
servant during the Progressive Era. In the early twentieth century, she gained widespread recognition for her dedicated advocacy regarding labor reform
in Delaware. As a female factory inspector operating in Wilmington around 1010 to 1915, Malone played a pivotal role in tackling child labor issues and
enforcing the state’s ten-hour work law, a measure crafted to protect female workers from exploitation. In tandem with her labor oversight duties, Malone
was heavily involved in the women’s suffrage movement, advocating alongside her contemporaries for women's voting rights.
Beyond her public reform efforts, Malone shared a deep, lifelong domestic and activist partnership with
Anna Woods Bird, a fellow suffragist from Delaware. Around 1915, Malone and Bird established a joint home by
purchasing Beaver Brook Farm located in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. The couple resided together on the farm for over four decades until 1956, building a
shared family life that included adopting a child. Their home became a vibrant social and political nexus, anchoring an extended community that welcomed
and supported other suffragist couples of the era.
Malone and Bird's cohabitation and shared commitments form an important chapter in early twentieth-century LGBTQ+ history, representing the domestic
and social structures built by same-sex couples within activist networks. Mary S. Malone passed away on March 30, 1968. Today, the historical
significance of their lives endures through the preservation of the Bird/Malone House in Chadds Ford, currently owned by Diana McCarthy.
