Mary Millicent Montgomery (1787 – March 21, 1868) was an English companion, writer, and central figure in prominent 19th-century female artistic and intellectual networks.
Born in County Tyrone, Ireland, in 1787, she spent much of her life in England living as an independent woman. She was deeply involved in literary circles—translating and publishing works such as Lights and Shadows of German Life—and maintained lifelong romantic friendships and loyal domestic partnerships with leading women of her era. She died unmarried and childless on March 21, 1868, in Middlesex, England.
In the 19th century, romantic friendships, intense female companionships, and cohabitation between women often formed essential emotional, social, and living structures. Mary Millicent Montgomery’s life highlights two major connections within these networks:
Mary Millicent Montgomery was the close friend, confidante, and former companion to Anne Isabella (Annabella) Milbanke, who married the poet Lord Byron.
Montgomery remained Lady Byron's closest lifelong friend and was considered a surrogate family member. When Lady Byron's daughter, the famous mathematician Ada Lovelace, was dying in 1852, she personally bequeathed sentimental keepsakes to Montgomery, describing her as "my Mother's oldest Friend".
Later in life, the elderly Miss Montgomery lived in London with Laura Herford as her companion.
Laura Herford was a groundbreaking English artist who famously broke gender barriers in 1860 by applying to the Royal Academy Schools using only her initials ("A. L. Herford"), forcing the Academy to admit its first female student.
Through her household with Montgomery, Herford was embedded in a supportive network of women that valued female autonomy, education, and artistic expression.
