Eva Chandler (March 23, 1856 - March 8, 1938) was born on March 23, 1855, in Pontiac, Michigan, as the daughter of Jonathan Chandler (1812–1879) and Vashti Lamdin Chandler (1818–1904).

She grew up in a large family with numerous siblings, including Anna, George, James, Sara, Jennie, Augusta, Frances, Charles, Julia, Susannah, Minnie, Horace, and Willard.

She earned her Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree from the University of Michigan in 1878, becoming part of the prominent network of early female scholars from Michigan who advanced women's higher education.

She pursued further graduate studies at the University of Zurich in 1896 and the University of Paris from 1908 to 1909.

Chandler began her career at Wellesley College as an instructor in mathematics from 1879 to 1888, served as an associate professor from 1888 to 1912, and later became a professor. During the 1900–1910 decade, she was a core member of the institution's mathematics department.

She was a member of the Association of Mathematical Teachers of New England, the American Association for the Advancement of Science (A.A.A.S.), and the National Geographic Society.

During her tenure, Wellesley College was distinctive for its entirely female professoriate and community of pioneering women educators.

Similar to many independent female academics of her era within the Wellesley network, faculty members often formed intense, lifelong domestic partnerships and professional households—historically contextualized through frameworks like "Boston Marriages" and female collegiate communities that provided mutual companionship and support.
