Cesare Pascarella (April 28, 1858 - May 8, 1940) stands as one of the most celebrated figures in late 19th- and early 20th-century Italian literature and art, renowned
particularly for his masterworks in the Roman dialect and his distinct talents as a painter.
After initial studies in a seminary that nurtured his introspective nature, he pursued his artistic training at the Istituto di Belle Arti in Rome, where he honed a remarkable graphic and pictorial style characterized by vivid realism and a deep affinity for landscape and portraiture. His literary genius was quickly recognized by the foremost cultural arbiters of his era, earning the profound admiration of critics and literary giants such as Giosuè Carducci and Benedetto Croce, who praised the vigorous authenticity and rhythmic vitality of his verse. Among his most celebrated contributions to Italian letters are "Villa Gloria" of 1886—a sweeping, evocative narrative poem commemorating the heroic volunteers of the Risorgimento that drew glowing praise from Carducci—and his monumental 1894 epic "La scoperta dell'America" ("The Discovery of America"), a tour de force of vernacular poetry that reimagined the epic voyage through a uniquely vernacular Roman lens.
