Auguste Scheibe (born Amalie Auguste Scheibe; January 23, 1824 – February 6, 1898) was a German author, translator, and political activist.
Born in Dresden to a craftsman’s family, Scheibe became active in the Deutsch-Katholisch (German Catholic) movement. In 1847, she worked as a governess, traveling with an English family.
She was deeply involved in the events surrounding the 1849 Dresden Uprising. After the defeat of the uprising, she played a key role in organizing the escape of the Austrian democrat Ferdinand Kürnberger from prison. She was also instrumental in founding a women’s organization designed to support families who had lost their breadwinners due to political arrests following the uprising.
Her work as an educator was hampered by police harassment, which eventually forced her to abandon the management of a kindergarten. She turned to writing and translation, often using the pseudonym "S. Augustin." Her literary contributions include translations of works by authors such as Charles Dickens, Edgar Allan Poe, and Honoré de Balzac.
Scheibe was the long-term partner and housemate of the writer Claire von Glümer. The two left Dresden together in 1852 and returned in 1859 after the pardon of von Glümer's brother. They lived together in Dresden for over 30 years, notably residing at Naumannstraße 1.
During the final two years of the life of the famous soprano Wilhelmine Schröder-Devrient, both Scheibe and von Glümer became her close confidantes. The three women shared a bond forged by their common experiences in the aftermath of the 1849 Dresden Uprising. Following Schröder-Devrient’s death, von Glümer was entrusted with organizing the singer's papers and diaries into a biography, which was published in 1862.
