William Ernest Mather (June 22, 1877 – November 4, 1899) attended Harrow School and was admitted as a pensioner at Trinity College in 1895, obtaining a B.A. in 1899. The first section of John Gambril Nicholson’s book of poems, Love in Earnest (1892), was dedicated to "W.E.M.", the second son of Rt. Hon. Sir William Mather, M.P., of Wood Hill, Prestwich, Manchester. Mather was a pupil of Nicholson at Rydal Mount School from 1888 to 1890. He became a director of Mather and Platt, Engineers, in Manchester but died young after being thrown from his horse. A photograph of Nicholson with Ernest, taken at Llandudno in June 1889, was published in The Book Collector (Summer 1978).
