Théodore
Sivel (1834 -

On March 22, 1874, with Joseph Crocé-Spinelli , he made a balloon climb (the Polar Star) at an altitude of 7,400 meters, from the La Villette gas plant to Bar-sur-Seine . This ascent made it possible to test the use of oxygen (equipment developed by Paul Bert) and to make astronomical observations by means of an apparatus built by Jules Janssen.
The 23 and 24 March, 1875, he participates in the record flight duration of Zenith (22:40).
On April 15, 1875, he died in Ciron with Crocé-Spinelli, during a new ascent to break the altitude record aboard the Zenith , which only Gaston Tissandier (1843 - 1899) survived.
He is buried in the Père-Lachaise cemetery, section 71, under a statue (1878) by Alphonse Dumilatre, who represents him lying on his back holding his unhappy flying companion by the hand.
