Image result for "Mary Garland Smith"Grace Arents lived at Bloemendaal House with her close companion Mary Garland Smith (July 20, 1868 – June 14, 1968), who was a teacher at St. Andrew's School. In Arents' will, she bequeathed one-third of her fortune to Smith and allowed Smith to live out her years at Bloemendaal. Arents' will also provided that after Smith's death, the property would transfer to the City of Richmond to be used as a formal, public garden named after Lewis Ginter.

Mary Garland Smith was born in Warsaw, Richmond County, Virginia and died in Richmond City, Virginia. She is buried at Riverview Cemetery Richmond, Richmond City, Virginia.
