Mary Louise Boynton (September 26, 1868 – March 2, 1951) was a trailblazing newspaper publisher, editor-in-chief, and the devoted lifelong partner and personal secretary of
legendary stage actress Maude Adams. A graduate of Vassar College in 1894, Boynton demonstrated early professional prowess when she
and her younger sister, Georgie, purchased the New Jersey newspaper the Perth Amboy Republican in 1897. Managing the publication as editor-in-chief until 1903, Boynton
earned widespread contemporary acclaim for her exceptional journalistic leadership.
In 1905, Boynton entered Adams's private and professional orbit, beginning a forty-five-year domestic partnership. She traveled extensively with Adams, serving as her indispensable personal secretary, managing her demanding schedule, arranging meetings, and assisting with script alterations. Their bond was exceptionally close; on the evening of March 3, 1951, in Tannersville, New York, Boynton retired to bed early with her usual glass of milk and graham crackers, where Maude found her peacefully deceased half an hour later.
Boynton's life stands as a prominent example of the hidden domestic partnerships forged by professional women during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Constrained by societal norms that necessitated discretion for public figures, women like Boynton and Adams lived together under the protective social guise of "companion" and "secretary." Modern LGBTQ historians recognize them as true romantic partners who built a home and life side by side for nearly half a century. The profound depth of their connection was underscored by its aftermath: grief-stricken by Boynton's passing, Adams experienced a drastic deterioration in her health—preventing her from attending the funeral—and abandoned her autobiography, leaving it forever unfinished. Today, the couple rests together for eternity under a shared headstone in Ronkonkoma, New York.
