Larger memorial image loading...Hugh Macmaster Coulter (August 26, 1919 - January 3, 1989) was an American abstract artist. His partner of over 26 years was Rev. Robert W. Wood. Coulter  was an early activist in the area of gay rights.

Hugh Macmaster Coulter was born in Santa Barbara, CA, the son of David Richard Coulter. He served in the Army Air Force during the Second World War. He attended So. Methodist School of Art in Dallas, the Brooklyn Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art. Beside painting, he worked as a cowboy in a travelling rodeo to make ends meet. In 1962, while performing in a rodeo in New York, he met the Reverend Robert Wood in a gay leather bar in Manhattan. Wood was another important early activist, protester, and author. The two entered a lifelong relationship that ended with Coulter's death in 1989. The story of their marriage has been the subject of several newspaper articles.

Hugh M. Coulter, died on January 3, 1989. When Wood died in 2018, they were buried next to one another.
