Georg Friedrich Dasbach (December 9, 1846 – October 11, 1907) was a notable German Catholic priest, publisher, and politician.
Born in Horhausen (Westerwald) to a family of bakers and innkeepers, Dasbach studied theology and philosophy at the seminary in Trier and the Gregorian University in Rome.
He was ordained as a Roman Catholic priest on March 24, 1871, and served as a chaplain in Trier. During the Kulturkampf (a period of conflict between the Prussian government and the Catholic Church), he was barred by the government from performing ministerial duties or teaching religion after 1875.
Following these restrictions, he pivoted to journalism and publishing. He founded the St.-Paulinus-Druckerei and established several influential publications, including the Paulinusblatt and the Trierische Landeszeitung, to advocate for the Catholic Church and the Centre Party (Zentrumspartei).
Dasbach became a prominent political organizer for the Centre Party, serving as a member of the Reichstag and the Prussian House of Representatives.
In 1904, allegations were published in the press claiming that Dasbach frequented young men involved in male prostitution. Dasbach responded by threatening a defamation lawsuit against the author, which ultimately resulted in an out-of-court settlement. During this era, such accusations were sometimes used as political tools to discredit conservative or religious figures in the public sphere.
Friedrich Dasbach is buried at the Church of St. Gangolf (St. Gangolf’s church) in Trier, Germany. Although he was originally interred at the municipal cemetery in Trier following his death in 1907, his remains were reinterred at the small churchyard of St. Gangolf in 1959.
