Baukje van Mesdag (September 26, 1853 - November 2, 1920) was born on September 26, 1853, in Bolsward, Netherlands. Coming from a notable Dutch family background closely tied to the arts and regional history, she grew up during the mid-to-late 19th century.
In the late 1880s, Baukje van Mesdag became closely associated with the prominent Dutch sculptor and art patron Elisabeth Sara Clasina ("Saar") de Swart.
In 1888, after Saar de Swart moved to Amsterdam to pursue her artistic training (studying under sculptor Lambertus Zijl), the two women took up rooms together at Westeinde.
Their partnership extended abroad. In September 1889, Baukje moved alongside Saar to Paris. During their time in France, they immersed themselves in the avant-garde art scene, meeting major cultural figures including Auguste Rodin, Vincent van Gogh, Émile Bernard, and Odilon Redon.
While Baukje and Saar's domestic partnership defined an important chapter of their youth within Amsterdam and Paris's bohemian circles, Baukje later married Maurits Willem van der Valk (whom she wed in Paris on May 9, 1891). They had one child together.
Baukje van Mesdag passed away on November 2, 1920, at the age of 67 in Laren, North Holland.
Baukje van Mesdag is documented in queer historical archives as a key early partner of Saar de Swart.
During the late 19th century, Saar de Swart and Baukje moved within the progressive, bohemian circles of De Tachtigers (The Movement of Eighty), a highly influential group of Dutch writers and artists (including Willem Kloos, Albert Verwey, and Frederik van Eeden). Within these circles, Saar lived openly as a lesbian—notably bypassing heterosexual overtures from male admirers like painter Eduard Karsen—with Baukje functioning as her primary companion, roommate, and travel partner during their formative years in Amsterdam and Paris.
