He died without legitimate issue. He was invested as a Knight before 1324. He held the office of Custodian of Halton Castle, Cheshire from September 1327 to 1348. He fought in the Scottish Wars. He fought in the Hundred Years War. He held the office of Justice of Chester between 1330 and 1333. He held the office of Constable of Dover Castle between 1330 and 1343. He held the office of Warden of the Cinque Ports between 1330 and 1343. He was created 1st Lord Clinton [England by writ] on 6 September 1330, even though his elder brother was at one point sitting in Parliament under an identical title. He held the office of Justice of Kent in 1332. He held the office of Admiral of the West between 1333 and 1335. He was created 1st Earl of Huntingdon [England] on 13 March 1336/37. He fought in the Battle of Sluys on 24 June 1340. On his death all of his titles became extinct.

2 (1) John de Clinton (d. 1315) married Margery Corbet, daughter of Sir William Corbet, before 24 February 1328/29. He succeeded to the title of 2nd Lord Clinton [E., 1299] in 1310. He fought in the Battle of Boroughbridge on 16 March 1321/22, with the royal army which defeated King Edward II's cousin Thomas, Earl of Lancaster. He was invested as a Knight before 1324.

He married, thirdly, Joan after 6 July 1367.1 He married, fourthly, Elizabeth de la Plaunche, daughter of William de la Plaunche and Elizabeth Hillary, before 24 October 1388. He succeeded to the title of 3rd Lord Clinton [E., 1299] before 1 April 1335. He fought in the Battle of Poitiers in 1356. He held the office of Constable of Warwick Castle between 1390 and 1397.
2.2.1 (3) (by Idonea de Say) Sir William Clinton (d. 25 Oct 1383) married Elizabeth Deincourt, daughter of William Deincourt, 2nd Lord Deincourt and Millicent la Zouche.
2.2.1.1 (4) William de Clinton, 4th Lord Clinton (b. c 1378, d. 30 Jul 1431) married, firstly, Anne Trivett, daughter of Sir Thomas Trivett and Elizabeth de Limbury. He married, secondly, Alice de Botreaux, daughter of William de Botreaux, 2nd Lord Botreaux and Elizabeth de St. Loe, between 13 August 1409 and November 1409. He married, thirdly, Mary. He succeeded to the title of 4th Lord Clinton [E., 1299] on 8 September 1398. In 1399 on the death of his cousin he succeeded to part of the Say lands in right of his grandmother and styled himself Lord Say.
2.2.1.1.1 (5) John de Clinton, 5th Lord Clinton (b. 1410, d. 24 Sep 1464) married, firstly, Joan Ferrers, daughter of Edmund Ferrers, 5th Lord Ferrers (of Chartley) and Ellen Roche, circa 29 October 1431. He married, secondly, Margaret St. Leger, daughter of Sir John St. Leger and Margaret Donet. He succeeded to the title of 5th Lord Clinton [E., 1299] circa August 1431. Circa 1438 he exchanged the Lordship of Maxstoke with the 6th Earl of Stafford, for the Lordships of Whiston and Woodford, Northamptonshire. In 1441 he was taken prisoner when serving in France and was held for more than six years until ransomed for 6,000 marks. On 1 November 1448 he relinquished all claims to the Barony of Saye in favour of Sir James Fiennes. In 1459 he was attainted for his Yorkist sympathies but was restored in 1461.
2.2.1.1.1.1 (6) Sir John Clinton, 6th Lord Clinton (b. c 1429, d. 29 Feb 1487/88) married, firstly, Elizabeth Fiennes, daughter of Sir Richard Fiennes and Joan Dacre, Baroness Dacre. He married, secondly, Anne Stafford, daughter of Sir Humphrey Stafford. He was buried at Grey Friars, London, England. He succeeded to the title of 6th Lord Clinton [E., 1299] on 24 September 1464. In 1471 he was apparently recognised as Lord Clinton and Say but never called to Parliament under either title.

He died at Covent Garden, London, England. He was styled as Lord Clinton. He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Callington Cornwall between 1646 and 1648.

He was invested as a Knight, Order of the Bath (K.B.) in 1661. He succeeded to the title of 5th Earl of Lincoln [E., 1572] on 21 May 1667. He succeeded to the title of 13th Lord Clinton [E., 1299] on 21 May 1667. On his death, the barony of Clinton fell into abeyance between his aunts.
